This is my 7th callaway wedge. I found the descriptions of the sole and bounce etc confusing . I liked the old “digger” classification Yet to decide if I guessed correctly

Callaway Wedges Are Underrated! Know Your Grind!

First, here's some info about me for context. I'm a 10.5 index and play 50 rounds a year. Chipping is NOT a strength of my game and because of that its pretty important for me to find a wedge that fits my game- just hard for me to have confidence in a club that isn't what I'm comfortable with. Carry the Apex AW edge and a 54 and 58 degree. Wedges have become so specialized with so many different offerings with very different shapes...and I don't mean just lofts and grind- the size of the wedge, the toe shape, the CG location, the leading edge shape (some are pretty straight and some are very curved) and of course all the grinds (and I think that for the average player/ mid handicapper and up, leading edge shape and relief and trail edge relief are a huge factor in how the wedge plays). For example, I've played a couple generations of "high toe" wedges"- the 2019 Callaway PM Grind and the 2024 Jaws 2nd gen Full Toe wedge. I got used to the launch window and flight of the higher CG in these clubs. Tried the Opus Platinum and that felt great to me. But the MD5 and the standard Opus with the CG lower just immediately launched the ball super high, I tended to "get under" the ball a lot and yardages on 3/4 and full shots were just inconsistent for me (yeah, its my swing for sure and stronger players likely adapt more easily, but I just had a hard time with those designs). With 2 years and probably 100 rounds and lots of practice on the 2nd gen Jaws Full Toe, I was looking for a replacement. Problem is, Callaway keeps changing the design offering in this style of wedge and there wasn't something in the lineup that immediately looked like the right fit for me. The 2nd gen Jaws Full Toe worked great for me- more square leading edge, much less offset, the "J" grind was very versatile with lots of trailing edge relief and heel and toe relief, and the 10 degrees of bounce was enough where i didn't dig/ chunk every 3/4 to full shot out of the fairway but not so much that I was bouncing the leading edge into the ball and blading it when opening the face. - Lots of versatility around the green with the heel, toe, and trailing edge relief. - The full toe provided a lower launch, more penetrating flight. - More consistent and predictable for me on 3/4 and full shots with the square leading edge and less offset. So I tried the Opus SP in X grind at 12 degrees of bounce in a 54 and 58. Here's what I found: - Shaping taking me a little getting used to. To raise the CG, there's a much chunkier top line and it just looks odd to me after playing some very thin top line wedges for a long time. - The X grind at 12 degrees of bounce is versatile, but it plays very differently than the Full Toe J grind at 10 degrees of bounce. - One big difference is the X grind with the higher bounce and leading edge relief is MUCH easier/ more forgiving on 3/4 to full swing shots out of the fairway/ tight lie. You'll be hard pressed to dig/ chunk a full swing with the X grind. - Another big difference is that it feels like MUCH more bounce on open face shots. Bunker shots are different- I have had a few shots where I've bounced the club into a bladed sand shot. Still working out the technique out of the sand with these wedges. My distance control has been all over the place. - The biggest difference is on open face shots in tight lies around the green- very different than the Full Toe. With the J grind at 10 degrees, the Full Toe had a pretty sharp leading edge that I could more easily get under the ball with chip shots around the green. For the same reason the Opus SP X grind was more forgiving on full shots from the fairway, its tricker/ more limited in shot options on tight lies around the green. After about a month with the wedges, my takeaway is: - Love the feel, sound, spin of the Opus SP. - The 54 degree is perfect for what I use that club for. - But I think I need to change the 58 X grind for a 58 C grind. Just need something with a little more versatility around the greens in tight lies. Considering keeping the 58 X grind and maybe changing out which one is in the bag based on course conditions (drier firmer conditions, play the C grind and wetter, softer conditions, put the X in the bag). Bottom line is Callaway has continued to up their wedge game and the Opus SP are on par with any Vokey or TaylorMade offering in my opinion. But with all the wedge options, #1 knowing what fits your game is important and then #2 finding the right wedge for your game is super important. That hasn't been an easy exercise for me. I would have gladly bought another set of the Full Toe wedges if Callaway still made them! (and I know they have a new Full Toe wedge out but its much more like the PM Grind in shaping- like they basically made a spin pocket version of the PM Grind which didn't work that great for me- too much curve in the leading edge and too much offset).

Change Opus Sp Upgrades.

I upgraded from a standard Opus 58 to the 60 Sp, has more solid feel , glides thru both the turf and sand better. This 46 has filled a gap that I had in my Modus set, now I only need the 54 that I will set at 53.

Excellent Wedge. Lower Ball Flight 5 Yards Extra

I purchased a new 54-degree Opus SP Chrome Wedge last month as an update to a well-used 54-degree Jaws wedge. This new wedge adds about 5 yards of carry with a slightly lower ball flight. Senior Golfer - 90-yard avg carry. Greenside spin is very good, though likely to brand new face.

It’s A Love Opus

Bought these on kind of a whim without ever hitting them and it turned out to be a great move. They are fantastic! Around the greens they are excellent but I found full shot control with these I haven’t had in a while. Don’t wait buy them now!!
