A quick walk through the clubs at your local Golf Galaxy will confirm what you already know: Players have more iron options than ever before, and there’s something for every swing.
But with all those choices, finding the right fit for you could seem like a complicated task.
It doesn’t have to be.
Starting with a baseline understanding of the four general categories of irons to help you narrow your search, then consider scheduling a custom golf club fitting to lock in your clubs.
Head Shape: Compact heads designed for maximum workability and feel
Forgiveness: Least forgiving, but provides the most workability
Best for: Low handicapper; typically seen on professional tours
Head Shape: Midsize with a blend of distance, forgiveness and feel
Forgiveness: Stronger lofts mean increased distance through the bag
Best for: Low- to mid-handicapper
Head Shape: Larger heads and wider soles for more forgiveness
Forgiveness: Designed for improved distance and higher launch, even on mishits
Best for: Mid- to high-handicapper
Head Shape: Largest available head shapes and soles
Forgiveness: Designed for the most forgiveness, with technology that helps players get the ball airborne and produce maximum distance
Best for: High handicapper
The overlap in categories means there’s no hard-and-fast rule about which iron style is right for you. It’s a combination of the performance metrics observed in a fitting and what suits your eye when you’re looking down on it. Your style of play and how much speed you generate matters just as much or more than your handicap.
“People want irons that represent their handicap, but there’s more to it than that,” says Golf Galaxy Director of Golf Experience and Master Clubfitter Chris Marchini. “I recently saw a 2-handicap player who had lost some speed through the years. I put him in a game-improvement model, and the differences were amazing. He [said], ‘I would've never considered this because I didn't think this was made for somebody in my handicap range.’”
There is often a misconception in golf about which irons are right for your game and swing. It's not about player type, it's about technology and club characteristics. Don't pigeonhole yourself into a player type, but still get what you need to play your best golf through an iron fitting!
This is where advanced fitting systems like the ones at Golf Galaxy can really help save you shots. An experienced fitter with the right measurement technology answers the “why” questions that are hurting your scores. For example: Why is my distance and ball flight not what I want or too inconsistent? “The fitter's job is connecting the dots to those whys,” Marchini says. “And the cool part is they're all different for everybody that plays this game.”
The fitting process itself has evolved far beyond the old days of hitting a few different stock 7-irons from a handful of manufacturers and calling it good. It goes beyond the raw ball speed numbers to optimize trajectory though the set to get the best blend of distance, height, spin, land angle and consistency. “I’ve personally done eight fittings for a one new model of iron where I’ve found the player six to nine yards of carry by weakening the loft and slightly slowing the ball speed, because we produced a more optimum ball flight and got a better peak height.”
Marchini likens your bag to a toolbox — and with a limit of 14 tools you can carry in it, you can’t afford to have a single club that doesn’t work for you. Luckily, Golf Galaxy makes it easier than ever to find the widest selection and personalized guidance you need to optimize your iron play.
