Toulon Golf Formula [45] Putter

About This Item

This is Formula. This is Toulon.

Over the course of the last few years, Toulon Golf has fielded questions from golfers asking if they would ever make a “zero-torque” putter. Toulon believes in its merit and started work, but wanted to be very thoughtful when entering this segment. It’s quickly becoming crowded and the differentiation between offerings from various companies has become increasingly blurry. It was important for them to think past their first thought.

As they developed and tested prototypes, some trends began to emerge. And as they dug deeper, a formula became evident. Toe hang in putters has primarily been thought of as a measurement from zero degrees (face balanced) to 90 (think of some of the Bullseye style putters from yesteryear.) The area between 0 and 90 degrees is densely populated with heel-shafted necks, short slant necks, flow necks, plumber’s necks, long necks and a collection of other curiosities. In their research in the putting studio at headquarters in Vista, Toulon found that golfers have a stroke path and face rotation that becomes very consistent when better matched to a specific putter – and the zero-torque movement is confining golfers to a strictly toe-up (or -90 degree toe hang) option.

This pigeon-holing into toe-up putters is a totally sensible solution as long as a golfer is willing to make significant adjustments to his or her putting stroke. Indeed, toe-up putters are an excellent option for many golfers. But all golfers deliver the putter head in different ways, sometimes slightly, other times dramatically. Could there possibly be a rotational profile between zero and -90 degrees that works for golfers?

With this in mind, Toulon Golf embarked on creating a series of zero-to-very low torque designs that would more-wholly match rotational profiles that most golfers already have. Presenting Formula – a series of three different putters – the center shafted, very-low torque Formula [CS], the even-lower torque Formula [45] and the zero-torque Formula [90].

The Science of Formula

Most golfers suffer from inconsistent results in putting.

Most professional players are playing mallets now and an even higher percentage of amateurs are too. Most mallets have centers of gravity that are positioned towards the rear of the head and thus produce a putter face that opens in a golfer’s backswing. That’s fine for a golfer that has a stroke with more face rotation. For this type of stroke, the golfer can rotate the face back to square at impact and produce putts that start on-line.

But many golfers struggle with rotating the face back to square. For those players, Toulon's Formula Series is perfect. The new Formula Series putters are designed to stay square to your path, allowing for a squarer face at impact that improves your start line and helps you hole more putts.

Formula [45]

If you have a very shallow arc to your stroke, you’ll be best suited to the Formula [45] model. With over 6,000 MOI and very-nearly zero torque, the Formula [45] allows for a small amount of face rotation and will naturally arc slightly during your stroke.

Designed 45 degrees toe-up. This putter is shafted slightly rearward from center, with three lines to help you align properly. Like all Formula Series putters, [45] uses a multi-material construction, allowing Toulon to move the center of gravity very forward to create unbelievable forgiveness. With the hosel moved rearward, this near zero torque design is a perfect match for a golfer with very little face rotation in his or her stroke. One of the most common bits of feedback from golfers who have tried zero torque is putts missed to the left. If that describes you, Formula [45] is an excellent choice.
