    Buying Tips

At Golf Galaxy, we recommend that you carry the following wedges in your bag, with four to six degrees of loft between each club for proper gapping:

    • Pitching Wedge (44 to 49 degrees): This is the most common type of wedge, and it is typically included in a set of irons and complete golf club sets. The pitching wedge is typically most effective from 110 to 125 yards out.
    • Gap/Approach Wedge (50 to 54 degrees): There is one major benefit to carrying a gap wedge: it allows you take a full swing when youre 80 to 100 yards from the holesomething most players are not able to do with a pitching wedge of sand wedge.
    • Sand Wedge (54 to 58 degrees): Sand wedges work well between 80 and 100 yards out. They are particularly effective on tough lies, whether in tall grass or, as the name implies, in the sand. The sand wedge is designed to elevate the ball quickly to help you escape trouble.
    • Lob Wedge (59 to 65 degrees): The highest-lofted club you will have in your bag, the lob wedge is designed to lift the ball high into the air and land it softly on the green. Use it from 60 yards out or closer to put the ball on the pin.

    Expert Advice

Get the right bounce angle. Low bounce is ideal for firmer ground and makes it easier to get under the golf ball. Standard bounce offers the most versatility. Count on high bounce options for rough or sand shots

Consider your home course. If the greens are small, fast and elevated, you need plenty of loft. Are the bunkers filled with a lot of soft sand? Get a sand wedge with more bounce or a wider sole. Choose less bounce if the turf is firm, resulting in tight lies.

All wedge grooves wear out over time. Consider replacing your wedges every 60 to 70 rounds, or more often if you frequently practice out of bunkers.

If youre serious about improving your short game, it may be time for professional wedge gap analysis at your local Golf Galaxy store. Our staff will evaluate your swing and determine exactly the loft and bounce you need for each wedge.

You will also get the most out of your new wedge by playing the right golf ball. If you struggle with control around the greens, consider a golf ball with a three- or four-piece constructionthese balls increase spin to help land the ball softly.
