Most manufacturers use satellite or aerial photography to calculate distances; however, some physically walk, or ground map courses like a caddy would on tour. With all mapping methods your location is then tracked by satellites (relative to the pre-mapped coordinates). Having instant access to this type of information is thought to have numerous benefits including lowered scores, increased confidence and faster play.
